How does an AusFindr tracker report its location?
The easiest way to think about it is that your tracker regularly sends out a secure Bluetooth signal saying:
“I’m here.”
When a nearby Apple or Android device detects that signal, it reports the tracker’s location through the Apple Find My or Google Find Hub network.
The nearby phone does not need to belong to you. It could be anyone walking past your luggage at an airport, a shopper near your bag, somebody near your parked car or a person in a neighbouring house.
The process happens automatically in the background. You then see the reported location in the Find My or Find Hub app on your own phone.
Does the tracker work when I am far away?
Yes. Your own phone doesn't need to be in range of the tracker.
For example, if your suitcase is at Melbourne Airport while you are in Adelaide, a nearby phone in Melbourne can detect your tracker and report its location.
You can then see that location from Adelaide. The same principle applies interstate and overseas.
This is one of the biggest advantages of Apple Find My and Google Find Hub trackers. Bluetooth is used to communicate with nearby devices, while the wider Apple or Google network allows you to see the reported location from almost anywhere.
How quickly does the location update?
In busy areas with plenty of nearby phones, location updates can happen very quickly.
Places such as airports, shopping centres, hotels, offices, public transport, residential areas and busy streets provide plenty of opportunities for nearby devices to detect your tracker.
If your tracker moves somewhere quieter, updates can be less frequent until another nearby device detects it.
The most useful way to think about the location shown in the app is:
“This is the most recent place where the network detected my tracker.”
For example, if your suitcase is detected at an airport at 10:15 am, Find My or Find Hub will show that location. If it is detected again at 10:30 am in another part of the airport, the location updates again.
What happens while travelling?
AusFindr trackers are very useful for luggage, bags and other belongings while travelling.
You will see your tracker move through locations such as:
Airport terminal → baggage area → transport hub → hotel
Unlike a dedicated GPS tracker, you should not expect to see a continuously moving dot following every metre of the journey.
Instead, the location updates as nearby devices detect the tracker.
In busy travel environments such as airports, train stations, hotels and city centres, there are often large numbers of devices nearby, giving the network plenty of opportunities to update the location.
Why does the app sometimes show a larger location area?
Sometimes Find My or Find Hub will show a larger circle instead of one exact point.
This simply means the network has reported an approximate location rather than a highly precise one.
Location accuracy can vary depending on where the nearby device is located.
For example, location information can be less precise in:
- large concrete buildings
- underground car parks
- remote outdoor areas
- high-rise buildings
- warehouses
Once your tracker is detected again, the location displayed in the app can update with a more precise location.
Why can the tracker sometimes appear slightly away from where it actually is?
The location shown in the app is based on the nearby device that detected your tracker.
For example, your tracker might be inside your house while your neighbour's phone detects it. The reported location could therefore appear slightly closer to the neighbouring property.
That does not mean your tracker has moved. If the item is nearby, you can also use Play Sound to help locate it.
Is Bluetooth range limited?
Bluetooth itself is short range, usually around 10–20 metres, but that does not mean your tracker only works when it is close to you.
Your tracker only needs to be close enough to a participating Apple or Android device for that device to detect it.
Because there are large numbers of Apple and Android devices in everyday locations, this creates a much wider network for locating your belongings.
That is what allows you to check the location of luggage, bags or other valuables even when they are far away from you.
